Cliffhanger follows Gabe Walker, a skilled mountain rescue ranger haunted by a tragic accident. During a dangerous rescue, Gabe fails to save a climber who falls to her death, leaving him overwhelmed with guilt. Unable to cope, he abandons his job and leaves the mountains behind.

Months later, Gabe returns to visit his friend and fellow ranger Hal Tucker. Still struggling with his past, he plans to leave again—until a distress signal comes in from a group stranded high in the Rocky Mountains. Gabe and Hal respond, believing it to be a routine rescue mission.

However, the call is a trap. The stranded individuals are actually part of a criminal gang led by Eric Qualen, who has hijacked a U.S. Treasury plane carrying millions of dollars. The plane crashed in the mountains, scattering the money in several cases across the harsh terrain. Unable to retrieve it themselves, the criminals lure rescue rangers to help.

Gabe and Hal are taken hostage and forced to assist in recovering the lost money. Using his climbing expertise, Gabe navigates treacherous cliffs, icy slopes, and narrow ledges—all while looking for opportunities to escape and fight back.

Separated from the group, Gabe begins a one-man resistance against the criminals. He uses the environment to his advantage, turning the mountains into a weapon. Through a series of intense confrontations, he eliminates gang members one by one while trying to protect Hal and his girlfriend Jessie.

The harsh conditions make survival extremely difficult. Avalanches, freezing temperatures, and deadly heights add constant danger. Despite this, Gabe’s determination grows as he confronts his fears and guilt.

The story builds to a final showdown between Gabe and Qualen atop a dangerous peak. In a brutal fight, Gabe defeats Qualen, sending him falling to his death and ending the threat.

With the criminals stopped and the stolen money recovered, Gabe begins to find redemption. By saving others and facing danger again, he overcomes the guilt that once controlled him.
