Cliffhanger (1993)
Cliffhanger is a high-stakes action thriller set in the treacherous Rocky Mountains, starring Sylvester Stallone as Gabe Walker, a skilled mountain climber and rescue ranger haunted by a tragic accident. The film opens with a harrowing scene where Gabe attempts to save Sarah, the girlfriend of his best friend Hal Tucker (Michael Rooker), during a routine rescue. Despite his efforts, Sarah falls to her death, and Gabe, guilt-ridden, disappears from his job and the community.
Eight months later, Gabe returns to the ranger station to collect his belongings, intending to leave for good. However, he’s persuaded to help with what appears to be a routine rescue call in the mountains. Unbeknownst to the rangers, the distress call is actually a trap set by a group of ruthless criminals led by the cold and cunning former U.S. Treasury agent Eric Qualen (John Lithgow).
Qualen and his team have just pulled off a daring mid-air heist, stealing $100 million in unmarked bills from a Treasury transport plane. The plan goes awry when the loot is accidentally dropped in the mountains. Posing as stranded climbers, the criminals force Gabe and Hal to help locate the lost suitcases full of cash using beacon signals.
Gabe quickly realizes the true nature of the situation and, using his knowledge of the terrain and mountaineering skills, begins a deadly game of cat-and-mouse across the freezing, perilous peaks. He sabotages the criminals’ efforts and tries to stay alive while protecting Hal and his former girlfriend Jessie (Janine Turner), who also becomes involved.
As the group moves from one cache location to another, internal tensions rise among the thieves, leading to violent betrayals. Gabe outwits and kills several of Qualen’s henchmen using a combination of clever tactics and sheer endurance. The conflict reaches its climax on a helicopter dangling off a cliff. In a final confrontation, Gabe lures Qualen into a trap and manages to destroy the helicopter, sending the villain to his death.
By the end, Gabe has not only survived the physical ordeal but also begun to find emotional redemption for Sarah’s death. The authorities arrive, and the stolen money is recovered.
