Over the Top
Over the Top (TV Cut) is a character-driven sports drama that follows Lincoln Hawk, a quiet, working-class truck driver with a troubled past and a strained relationship with his young son. Hawk earns a modest living arm wrestling at truck stops, using the sport as both a source of income and a way to measure personal strength and resilience.
The story begins with Hawk setting out on a cross-country journey to reunite with his son, Michael, whom he has not seen in years. Michael has been raised by his wealthy and controlling maternal grandfather, Jason Cutler, who despises Hawk and believes him unfit to be a father. Hawk’s wife, Christina, is terminally ill and asks him to take responsibility for their son, hoping father and son can finally bond.

At first, the reunion is tense. Michael resents Hawk’s rough lifestyle and resists his attempts at connection. As they travel together in Hawk’s truck, their relationship slowly evolves. Hawk teaches Michael life lessons about perseverance, humility, and inner strength, while Michael begins to see beyond his father’s simple appearance to recognize his sincerity and moral integrity.
Throughout the journey, Hawk participates in arm-wrestling matches, building toward the world championship tournament in Las Vegas. These scenes emphasize the discipline and focus behind Hawk’s seemingly casual approach, revealing arm wrestling as a serious test of endurance, technique, and willpower. The TV cut softens some of the film’s harsher moments, placing greater emphasis on emotional development rather than aggression.
Cutler repeatedly tries to regain custody of Michael, using his wealth and influence to undermine Hawk. After Christina’s death, Cutler temporarily succeeds, separating father and son. This loss devastates Hawk but also strengthens his resolve. With nothing left to lose, he enters the Las Vegas championship, determined to prove his worth not just as an athlete, but as a father.

In the final tournament, Hawk faces a series of formidable opponents, each representing physical dominance and arrogance. Drawing strength from his bond with Michael, Hawk wins match after match. The climactic final bout tests him to his limits, but he ultimately triumphs, winning the championship and earning respect on his own terms.
The film concludes with Hawk regaining custody of Michael and beginning a new life together. Over the Top (TV Cut) emphasizes redemption, fatherhood, and perseverance, presenting strength not as brute force, but as the courage to endure hardship and stay true to one’s values.
