Over the Top (1987)
Over the Top (1987) is a sports drama film starring Sylvester Stallone as Lincoln Hawk, a quiet but determined truck driver who seeks redemption and reconnection with his estranged son through the unlikeliest of means—competitive arm wrestling.
Lincoln Hawk has spent years working on the road, estranged from his wealthy father-in-law Jason Cutler (Robert Loggia) and from his own son, Michael (David Mendenhall), whom he barely knows. After the death of his wife Christina, Hawk is called back into Michael’s life. Christina’s final wish was for Hawk to reunite with their son and build a relationship. Cutler, who despises Hawk and blames him for past choices, is strongly opposed to this reunion.
Hawk picks up Michael from his military school and the two embark on a cross-country journey in Hawk’s semi-truck. At first, Michael is arrogant, distrustful, and dismissive of Hawk, having been raised in privilege and taught that his father abandoned the family. However, through a series of bonding experiences—roadside conversations, truck driving lessons, and even a few arm wrestling matches—Michael begins to see a different side of his father.
As the two grow closer, Hawk reveals his dream of winning the World Armwrestling Championship in Las Vegas, a competition that offers a grand prize of $100,000 and a brand-new truck. For Hawk, the tournament represents more than just a title—it’s his shot at financial independence and the means to start a new life with his son.
Cutler, determined to keep Michael under his control, intervenes and takes the boy away, using his wealth and influence. Desperate, Hawk breaks into Cutler’s estate to get Michael back, but is arrested and humiliated. With nothing left, he heads to Las Vegas to compete in the tournament.
In a dramatic final showdown, Hawk faces off against reigning champion Bull Hurley, a massive and intimidating opponent. Despite overwhelming odds and the pressure of the moment, Hawk defeats Hurley in a grueling match, using his signature move—“going over the top.”
Over the Top is a classic underdog story wrapped in 1980s grit and heart. At its core, it’s about second chances, fatherhood, and the belief that love and perseverance can overcome even the heaviest of obstacles. Hawk’s quiet strength and emotional journey make him a memorable hero in this cult favorite.
