A remake of the 1974 cult classic, the film stars Nicolas Cage as retired car thief Randall “Memphis” Raines, who is pulled back into the criminal underworld to save his brother’s life.
Memphis Raines was once a legendary car thief, infamous for being able to steal any car in under a minute. After years away from the life, he’s living quietly and legally. But when his younger brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) botches a job for ruthless British gangster Raymond Calitri (Christopher Eccleston), Memphis is forced to return to his old ways. Kip was supposed to steal 50 high-end cars for Calitri, but failed, and now Calitri threatens to kill him unless the job is completed in 72 hours.
To save Kip, Memphis reunites with his former crew, including his old mentor Otto (Robert Duvall), ace driver Sway (Angelina Jolie), and other skilled specialists. Each car must be delivered in perfect condition, and many of them are high-security models, including a rare and elusive 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang, affectionately called “Eleanor”—Memphis’s white whale.
The task is further complicated by the presence of police detectives Castlebeck (Delroy Lindo) and Drycoff (Timothy Olyphant), who have long suspected Memphis and now see an opportunity to catch him in the act. As the deadline looms, the crew works through the night, stealing the cars in a single operation to minimize risk—a “one night, one shot” plan.
The final act builds to a thrilling car chase as Memphis races against time to deliver Eleanor, pursued by police through the streets, highways, and even a shipyard. With his brother’s life hanging in the balance, Memphis uses every ounce of his skill behind the wheel to complete the job.
In the end, he delivers the last car late, but his loyalty and effort convince Calitri’s enforcers to back off. Calitri himself is confronted and ultimately defeated, thanks in part to Detective Castlebeck, who reluctantly lets Memphis go after recognizing his motives and bravery.
