Months later, Gabe reluctantly returns to the Rocky Mountain Rescue base to retrieve his belongings and say goodbye to Jessie (Janine Turner), his girlfriend and fellow ranger. However, his plans change when a distress call comes in from a group supposedly stranded on a remote peak after a plane crash. Against his better judgment, Gabe joins Hal to respond—unaware that the distress signal is actually a trap.

The “survivors” turn out to be a band of criminals led by the ruthless Eric Qualen (John Lithgow), who have hijacked a U.S. Treasury plane carrying $100 million in cash. During the heist, the plane crashed in the mountains, scattering the suitcases of money across several peaks. Qualen forces Gabe and Hal to help him locate the lost money using their climbing expertise.

As the group ascends through treacherous cliffs and icy storms, Gabe seizes an opportunity to escape and begins using his knowledge of the terrain to outsmart and pick off the heavily armed criminals one by one. The film delivers intense sequences of free climbing, daring jumps, and brutal hand-to-hand combat—each scene amplifying the danger of the harsh mountain environment.

The final act culminates in a spectacular showdown on a dangling helicopter above a cliff edge, where Gabe defeats Qualen in a fierce fight that ends with the villain falling to his death.

In the aftermath, Gabe, Hal, and Jessie are rescued by helicopter, finally finding closure and redemption after the tragedy that once tore them apart.

Cliffhanger combines breathtaking visuals with relentless tension, showcasing Stallone not only as an action hero but as a man struggling for redemption. The film’s practical stunts, filmed on real mountains, make it one of the most visually stunning and thrilling action movies of the 1990s.
