The film begins with a bloody armored truck robbery gone wrong. During the shootout, one thief, MacDonald (Matthew Modine), is severely injured and left with near-total amnesia. The stolen money disappears, and with MacDonald unable to remember anything, the police consider him useless as a witness. He is quietly transferred to a psychiatric facility for long-term care.

Backtrace (2018) Review - The Action Elite

Seven years pass.

Inside the clinic, MacDonald is suddenly broken out by two mysterious criminals, Lucas (Ryan Guzman) and Farren (Tyler Jon Olson). They believe he still knows where the hidden money from the heist is stored — even if he can’t remember it consciously. To force the memories back, they inject him with an experimental drug designed to rapidly unlock lost traumatic experiences.

Meanwhile, Detective Sykes (Sylvester Stallone) and FBI Agent Franks discover MacDonald has escaped and realize the stolen millions may finally resurface. They launch a multi-agency manhunt, attempting to track both the criminals and the unstable MacDonald before the situation becomes violent.

As fragments of memory return, MacDonald struggles with confusion, fear, and flashes of betrayal. He begins to recall that someone from within the original heist team had double-crossed the others — and that the missing money is connected to a deeper conspiracy.

MacDonald eventually pieces together the location of the stolen cash, but tensions explode between Lucas’s crew, the authorities closing in, and those who organized the original betrayal. The final confrontation reveals why MacDonald was left alive and how he was manipulated from the beginning.

In the end, Detective Sykes uncovers the truth behind the robbery and realizes MacDonald was not the criminal mastermind people assumed, but a pawn caught between corrupt forces. With the conspiracy exposed, Sykes is left to decide whether to bring MacDonald in or let him escape with the chance at a new life — now knowing exactly what he lost.
