Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992)
Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot is a comedic action film starring Sylvester Stallone as Joe Bomowski, a tough, no-nonsense Los Angeles police sergeant whose life becomes chaos when his overbearing and well-meaning mother, Tutti Bomowski—played by Estelle Getty—comes to visit. Joe is used to dangerous criminals, shootouts, and high-stress police work, but nothing prepares him for the whirlwind of embarrassment, interference, and unintended disaster his mother brings.
Tutti arrives full of love and concern, but expresses it through relentless nagging, obsessive cleaning, and constant meddling in Joe’s personal and professional life. She is determined to fix everything, from his messy apartment to his stagnant love life—especially his relationship with fellow officer and ex-girlfriend Gwen. Joe tries to maintain control, but Tutti’s motherly instincts push her into situations where she absolutely does not belong.

One night, after overhearing Joe complain about never having a mother who truly helped him, Tutti becomes determined to prove her worth. She ventures into a dangerous part of town to buy her son a handgun as a surprise gift—completely unaware that the deal is illegal. When criminals flee the scene, she ends up becoming the only witness to a murder connected to an underground weapons-trafficking ring. Joe is forced to take her statement, babysit her constantly, and keep her out of harm’s way—tasks far more frightening than any case he’s worked on.
Despite being inexperienced and overly enthusiastic, Tutti becomes unintentionally helpful. Her nosiness leads her to uncover key clues the police overlooked. As she barges into Joe’s investigation, she disrupts stakeouts, disarms criminals with motherly lectures, ruins interrogations, and even attempts to wash Joe’s gun. But slowly, the mother-son duo forms an effective, if chaotic, team.
When the gun-smuggling organization targets Tutti to silence her, Joe must protect her while cracking the case. The final confrontation leads to a comedic yet action-packed showdown involving car chases, accidental heroics, and Tutti boldly facing criminals with fearless maternal energy.
In the end, Tutti’s meddling not only helps solve the case but also repairs the strained relationship between Joe and Gwen. Joe finally admits he loves his mother—despite the chaos she brings—and Tutti proudly returns home, satisfied that she “helped.”
Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot is a lighthearted comedy about love, family, and the hilarious trouble only a mother can cause.
