Daylight (1996)
Daylight is a disaster thriller set almost entirely inside the Holland Tunnel, where an ordinary commute turns into a desperate fight for survival. The film begins during a severe storm in New York City as a convoy of trucks carrying hazardous materials enters the tunnel. At the same time, a group of civilians—families, commuters, and workers—become trapped inside when a massive explosion collapses both ends of the tunnel.
The blast kills dozens instantly and floods the tunnel with fire, debris, and toxic smoke. With exits sealed and rescue teams unable to reach the survivors, panic spreads among the small group of people still alive. They include Kit Latura, a former emergency medical services chief who quit after a tragic rescue failure; Madelyne Thompson, a tunnel engineer who understands the structure; and a diverse group of civilians forced to rely on one another.

As fires rage and oxygen levels drop, the survivors must navigate the wreckage while avoiding explosions, collapsing walls, and rising water. Kit steps into a leadership role, using his emergency training to calm the group and organize an escape. Haunted by his past, he struggles with the fear of repeating his earlier mistakes, but necessity forces him to act.
Rescue teams attempt multiple strategies from the outside, but the unstable tunnel makes traditional methods impossible. Kit proposes a dangerous plan: the survivors must travel deeper into the tunnel to reach a ventilation shaft and escape through the river. The journey is perilous, costing lives as toxic fumes, falling debris, and structural failures take their toll.
Tensions rise within the group as fear and exhaustion push individuals to the breaking point. Acts of selfishness contrast with moments of heroism, revealing the best and worst of human nature under pressure. Madelyne’s technical knowledge proves essential, while Kit’s compassion and resolve keep the group moving forward.
In the climax, the survivors reach the escape route, but flooding threatens to drown them. Kit sacrifices his own safety to ensure the others escape, facing the full force of the rushing water. Though injured and nearly killed, he survives, pulled from the tunnel at the last moment.
The film ends with the survivors reunited with loved ones as dawn breaks over the city. Kit finds redemption, having confronted his past and saved lives despite overwhelming odds.
Daylight is a claustrophobic disaster film focused less on spectacle than on endurance and human resilience. It emphasizes leadership, sacrifice, and the fragile line between survival and tragedy when ordinary people face extraordinary danger.
