Cobra (1986)
Cobra follows Lieutenant Marion “Cobra” Cobretti, an elite Los Angeles police officer assigned to the Zombie Squad, a special unit that handles cases too extreme for conventional law enforcement. Known for his tough demeanor and absolute refusal to negotiate with criminals, Cobra believes swift, lethal force is the only effective response to escalating urban violence.
The film opens with a tense supermarket hostage crisis that immediately establishes Cobra’s reputation. Ignoring negotiations, he confronts and kills the gunman, ending the standoff but drawing criticism from city officials who question his methods. Despite the controversy, Cobra is trusted when a series of brutal murders terrorizes Los Angeles. The killings are carried out by a violent cult called the New Order, whose members believe society must be cleansed through chaos and bloodshed.

The cult targets Ingrid Knudsen, a fashion model who witnesses one of their murders. Cobra is assigned to protect her after her testimony makes her a primary target. As Cobra escorts Ingrid to a remote safe house, the cult intensifies its pursuit, launching coordinated attacks that reveal the extent of their organization and their infiltration into law enforcement.
As the investigation deepens, Cobra discovers that the New Order is preparing a large-scale massacre at an industrial complex. With little trust in his superiors and limited backup, Cobra takes the fight directly to the enemy. His investigation turns increasingly personal as corrupt officers within the department attempt to sabotage his efforts, proving that the cult’s influence reaches far beyond the streets.
The conflict culminates in a violent showdown at a steel mill, where Cobra faces the cult’s leader, the Night Slasher. The final battle is brutal and relentless, involving gunfire, explosions, and hand-to-hand combat. Cobra ultimately kills the Night Slasher in a fiery confrontation, dismantling the cult and preventing their planned attack.
In the aftermath, Cobra walks away from the wreckage with Ingrid, having saved her life and restored order through uncompromising force. Though criticized and isolated within the police force, Cobra remains steadfast in his belief that decisive action is sometimes necessary to protect innocent lives.
Cobra is a hyper-stylized action film emblematic of the 1980s, embracing minimal dialogue, exaggerated violence, and a vigilante-style hero. Beneath its surface lies a reflection of era-specific anxieties about crime, justice, and authority, portraying a world where one man stands alone against chaos.
