The story begins with Bryan Mills, a former government agent who has retired in hopes of rebuilding his relationship with his teenage daughter, Kim. Now living in Los Angeles, Bryan is a cautious and overprotective father who regrets not being around during her childhood. Kim lives with her mother, Lenore, and wealthy stepfather, and wants to travel to Paris with her friend Amanda during summer break. Bryan is hesitant but reluctantly agrees after being pressured by Kim and Lenore.

Shortly after arriving in Paris, Kim and Amanda are targeted by an Albanian human trafficking ring that abducts young female tourists. Bryan, who is on the phone with Kim at the time of the abduction, hears the kidnapping happen in real-time. In one of the film’s most iconic moments, Bryan warns the kidnappers through the phone that he has “a very particular set of skills,” and promises to find and kill them if they do not release his daughter.
