Cliffhanger (1993)
Cliffhanger (1993), directed by Renny Harlin and starring Sylvester Stallone, is a gripping high-altitude action thriller that combines breathtaking mountain scenery with intense physical and emotional drama. Stallone plays Gabe Walker, an expert mountain climber and rescue ranger haunted by a tragic accident that shattered his confidence and friendships.
The film opens with one of the most iconic sequences in 1990s cinema. Gabe and his partner Hal Tucker (Michael Rooker) attempt to rescue their friends Jessie (Janine Turner) and Sarah from a stranded climber’s line high above a massive canyon. When Sarah’s harness fails, she slips from Gabe’s grasp and falls to her death, leaving him traumatized and guilt-ridden. Unable to forgive himself, Gabe leaves the mountain community, abandoning his job and his relationship with Jessie.
Months later, Gabe reluctantly returns when Hal and Jessie call for help. A distress signal has been received from a crashed plane in the Rocky Mountains, and Gabe agrees to join the rescue mission. But when they arrive, they discover it’s a trap — the “survivors” are actually criminals led by the ruthless Eric Qualen (John Lithgow), a former military intelligence officer turned international thief.
Qualen and his team had hijacked a U.S. Treasury plane carrying $100 million in cash. During a mid-air transfer, things went wrong, and the suitcases full of money scattered across the mountains. Now stranded in the freezing wilderness, the criminals force Gabe and Hal to help them locate the missing money using mountain-climbing expertise.

As the group ascends through the treacherous terrain, Gabe seizes an opportunity to escape and begins a deadly game of cat and mouse. Using his knowledge of the mountains, he turns the tables on the heavily armed mercenaries, one by one. The tension escalates as Gabe sabotages their plans, recovers some of the money, and reunites with Jessie. Meanwhile, Hal, initially resentful of Gabe for Sarah’s death, begins to see his friend’s courage and determination to make things right.
The film’s action sequences are breathtaking — from intense climbing stunts performed on real cliffs to helicopter chases and brutal hand-to-hand combat amid snow and ice. Stallone performs many of his own stunts, adding realism and raw tension to every scene.
In the thrilling climax, Gabe and Jessie face Qualen in a dramatic showdown aboard a dangling helicopter over a canyon. After a fierce struggle, Gabe manages to hook the helicopter to a steel ladder, sending Qualen plummeting to his death in a fiery explosion. As rescue teams arrive, Gabe, Jessie, and Hal embrace, finally finding redemption and closure after the tragedy that once tore them apart.
